If you are wondering what’s the difference between our Classic Sateen and Crisp Percale organic cotton bed sheets, here’s what you need to know.

At SOJAO, we have two collections of bedding - Classic and Crisp, both made sustainably from GOTS-Certified long staple organic cotton. Our Classic Collection bedding is made using a sateen weave, while our Crisp Collection bedding uses a percale weave.

Understanding the differences between these two types of weaves will help you make an informed decision that ultimately enhances your sleep quality. With the same base material of organic cotton, different weaving methods would produce different fabric characteristics. Between our Classic Sateen bed sheets and Crisp Percale bed sheets, what are their differences and which should you choose? Here’s a quick guide to help you decide.

A quick overview of topics

What is Sateen?

Sateen, a type of weaving technique, is crafted by interlocking threads in a satin weave structure. The thread is woven looser than percale, created by spinning three or four threads over one. This exposes more of the thread surface, creating a smooth and lustrous finish that produces more sheen. Sateen bed sheets, due to their dense structure, tend to be less airy but softer and smoother than percale bed sheets. They offer exceptional softness on both sides, resulting in a buttery soft handfeel.

What is Percale?

Percale, on the other hand, is a weave technique where horizontal and vertical strands are interlace in a tight ‘over-under-over-under’ pattern. This creates bed sheets that are exceptionally durable and crisp. With a tight-knit structure, percale bed sheets are lightweight and breathable, making it cool to the touch.

Handfeel

The main difference between our Classic Sateen and Crisp Percale bed sheets is the overall handfeel.

Our Classic Sateen bedding, crafted with a sateen weave, are buttery soft, smooth, and lightweight. In contrast, our Crisp Percale bedding, made with a percale weave, are cooling, beautifully structured, and have a soothing crisp feel.

Appearance

Sateen beddings typically have a slight sheen that gives off a luxurious look. With a smooth and lustrous finish, our Classic Sateen bed sheets add a touch of sophistication to your room. They are naturally wrinkle-resistant, which provides a silky smooth look that enhances the elegance of your bedroom.

Our Crisp Percale beddings, on the other hand, have a matte finish that exudes a crisp and high-end hotel look. They are however, more prone to wrinkles, but this can be easily fixed by ironing to enhance its crisp and refined look

Durability

Both sateen and percale bed sheets are durable, easy to maintain and long-lasting with the right laundry care. However, with the tight-knit pattern of the percale weave, they tend to be more durable compared to sateen as it is inherently softer.

Temperature

While both our Classic Sateen and Crisp Percale bed sheets provide a cool sleep in warmer climates, the degree of coolness varies due to their weave structures. Using a ‘four/three-over-one-under’ weave pattern, the dense structure of a sateen weave tends to trap more heat, making them an ideal choice for cold sleepers.

Percale, on the other hand, uses a tight ‘over-under-over-under’ pattern, which allows for better airflow (more breathability) and cooler sleeping experience. This would be more ideal for hot sleepers.

Wash Care

Sateen and percale bed sheets are generally easy to care for. At SOJAO, our Classic Sateen and Crisp Percale bedding are proudly low-maintenance and durable with simple care instructions. Simply toss these into a washing machine and let it take care of the rest. Click here to find out more about the washing instructions.
